5 Tips for Graduate Lawyers Working from Home

With many to most law firms currently working from home, it’s safe to say that most of us have found

1. Prioritise Daily Catch Ups

During these unfortunate times, it’s easy for graduate lawyers to feel a lack of work and a bit ‘lost’ in relation to what is expected of them. Schedule in virtual meetings with the Associates/Partners in your team and check in regarding your performance and what you need to get done that day.

2. Ask for Tasks

Don’t wait to be contacted/given a task, use your initiative and ask for work if you find yourself twiddling your thumbs. This will reflect really well on you and your capabilities.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

Nothing can replace working alongside an actual human and observing what they do on a daily basis and you often might find yourself confused about a particular task you have been given via email. Well, do not be afraid to ask questions. Pick up the phone and call someone to clarify the question. Hot tip: the key to asking good questions is to show that you have also attempted to find the answer yourself.

4. Presentation

You’re working from home and we all know how easy it is to wear pyjamas all day! However, make the effort to shower and get dressed as if you were going into the office. You still want to impress your colleagues and show your professionalism. The same goes for your background on video calls, make sure it isn’t a pile of dirty dishes – again, you want to appear professional. This will also help your productivity.

5. Don’t Be Hard on Yourself

These are difficult times for everyone, particularly for those who started out in a new role this year. You may be feeling a little lost and confused at times, so don’t be too hard on yourself and accept that these feelings are completely normal and most graduates are probably feeling the exact same way!
